Good Morning Noon

Good Morning Noon, originally uploaded by snailbooty.

So I finally got all my marks and my final average is an 83! I was really happy. I ended up with a 94 in critical theory!

Yesterday I started summer school and really like the instructor. Thank goodness because I'm going to have her in June for the next class. So this one now is called Contemporary Issues: Art Today and it runs until the end of June. Here's the description:

This introductory studio-seminar course exposes students to some of the issues, theories, conceptual and formal strategies that inform contemporary art practice. This specific offering concentrates on drawing and painting with reference to other media. Each weekly seminar explores current ideas and discourses through some of the following: presentations of artists’ works, analysis of assigned readings, and students’ presentations of their own projects.

The next one is a 3 week intensive course called Painting and Digital Imaging. I'm super stoked to take it, but am a little nervous about having a painting assignment due for each class. Here's the description:

The capacity to manipulate and synthesize images digitally from a vast number of sources allows artists increased latitude in generating ideas for paintings. In this studio/lab-based course, students use the computers, digital cameras and scanners to gather images and create compositions for their paintings. Through a combination of painting and digital experiments, students explore a range of possibilities for expanding the painter's vocabulary.

I've got a shitload of old photos and some crap from my teen years that I'll probably work into paintings. I also have a whole box of slides we found at Goodwill last summer that I'm going to try and use.

Then from the end of June to the first week of August I'll be taking History of Modern Art. Here's the description:

This lecture course surveys major artistic movements and artists from the 1860s to the 1970s. We begin by examining the roots of Modernism and proceed to a consideration of movements such as Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism. We then examine Duchamp and the Armory Show of 1913 to illustrate the influence of the early-20th-century European avant-garde on North American art and aesthetics, particularly Abstract Expressionism. We conclude with a discussion of mid-20th-century art movements, including British and American Pop, Conceptual Art, Minimalism, Performance, Land-based Art and Post-Minimalism.

This will probably end up being mostly essays and exams, and I have a friend taking it as well, so it'll be good to have someone to study with.

I have so many photos from my first year drawing class that I just haven't had time to tweak and upload yet but I'll get to it eventually.

OH last night I started a dance class.

A hip hop dance class.

...

STOP LAUGHING I'm serious!!!!

I haven't taken a dance class since I was 9 years old and even then it was Royal Conservatory Ballet - ugh. I do love shaking my ass on the dance floor (the 2 times a year I actually go out dancing) so I thought what better way to get in shape an learn some new moves.

My ass and obliques are KILLING today though, ya'll. Maybe by the end of the class in June I'll have the balls to tape myself dancing and share it with you.

Maybe.

P.S. Here's a shot of a sculpture that I made last November. Just totally forgot to post photos of it!

Borderline Normal

Freudlo, originally uploaded by Tommykane.

I was supposed to check out a facebook-induced event last night at Kalendar, but ended up feeling all headache-y from my allergies so I wimped out and stayed home. Which is also why I'm inside writing this, rather than sitting on my deck, soaking up the sunshine. Sigh.

For the last 4 months, our condo looked as though an art supply store birthed a giant poo baby who wouldn't stop spontaneously pooing all over the place. I've never let my home get as dirty as I did this past school year. I spent the whole day yesterday organizing all the loft junk into an semi-cool workspace. Now that I've been at school, I finally have a sense of what kind of stuff I need to effectively complete homework without having everything everywhere.

Now that things are organized, I need to spend a couple of hours actually cleaning it. But I don't really feel like it. So, I'm online enjoying my flickr contacts' photos. I think I'm in love with Tommykane's sketchbook.

5/01/2007

Good news: I'm a golden baby

So, my marks are starting to come in. I'm still waiting on 3 courses but the verdict thus far, is an A!!!! That is because:

A. I'm a super, academically-inclined, mega-geek,

and

B. I'm a mature student.

Most of my peers were born in the 80s, and next year they'll be kids born in 1990. They have not really known a world without cellphones, computers, the Internet or the Simpsons. They're still sorting out the whole "growing up" thing. This is my killer advantage.

It's amazing how well you can perform when you have already experienced over a decade's worth of sometimes well-intentioned yet mostly unconsidered critiques of your work from 10-20 different boss/manager types.

I'm not at university to please my parents, to get a higher paying job or even to get institutional permission to call myself an artist. I'm there to learn as much as I can about approaches to materials, history, techniques and theory and to interact, network and collaborate with teachers, students and others as much as possible.

Even though I remember pre-VCR, I am certainly a TV baby, having learned to privilege visual experiences over others. I guess, in that respect we often find common ground and can be friends (facebook is eating my soul!!!!).

Anyway, there's nothing that could convince me to go back in time and relive years 17 through 23.

Ok, MAYBE if I had to save the world from a robot war or nuclear winter or something.

Bad news: R.I.P. Abigail

But they often seem strong and passionate to those around you.

I firestormed the shit out of that critical theory final. Now I will have a smoke and a pancake. Then i will sleep for 12 hours.

my husband is an rc geek. sort of.

this is his new favourite toy: the WowWee Flytech Dragonfly

this is what they sound like:

i rode my bike today and it was windy, a bitter, bitter wind. my advice to anyone contemplating riding into the wind from west parkdale to cabbagetown on a bike with no gears, post-therapeutic massage and starving cause it was 2 o'clock and you hadn't eaten yet. don't bother.

i had to pull over a couple of times cause my hamstrings and calves felt all explody. i was hoping to make it home to have some tomato soup with grated cheddar cheese and toast but by the time i got to college and grace i felt like i was going to pass out. so i stopped at bar burrito and ate a 8" chipotle steak burrito, then rode home. the burrito was pretty good but i kinda wished i had gone to utopia across the street. oh well.

in other news, i have 2 projects to go before my critical theory final on the 25th. i'm currently working on:
  • a new painting for colour and composition class
  • a 3D model, something architectural, for art and design in the social sphere class.
i'm also working on getting shots of all my drawing and printmaking work so that i can post more for your viewing pleasure.

holy crap! i'm a 34C!

Since school started, my sleeping schedule is all over the place, so I basically eat smaller meals whenever I'm hungry, which is about every 2-4 hours. I've also been a weight training once a week with my personal trainer brother.

7 days

Last fall, and now that the snow has finally melted, I've been riding my bike 4 times a week to and from school which ends up being 10-15 minutes each way.

7 days - detail

Just one year ago I was a 38D and 2 dress sizes bigger. I also pretty much sat on my ass all day at a desk, sometimes in front of a computer that I shared with 3 other people.

7 days - detail

These are shots from the last project I submitted to my Art and Design in the Social Sphere class.

SUBJECT: Create a recording of something. Interpret the word "recording" as you see fit. This could mean a literal recording, a trace, data analysis, a copy, etc...

CRITERIA/MATERIALS: Format and materials are open.

MY INTERPRETATION:

I saved 7-days worth of packaging and non-perishable trash from whatever I bought or finished and used a glue gun to collage it to an old canvas I had lying around as a record of my consumption.

Can't get enough of complaining, whining or bitching?

Well then you've come to the right place!

The last few days have been way below normal temperatures, super dry weather and extreme winchills. Today it's not too bad, and all the snow is starting to melt.

Why poopee, you say, you should be happy it's warming up and the sun is shining!

My response: I wish I could be. For someone who is allergic to molds and dust it's pure hell. For the last 2 weeks, I've had an inflammation of the nasal passages and a sinus headache with serious light sensitivity from all the massive weather changes we've been having. I'm taking (legal) drugs like crazy, just so I can get out of bed and not have to wear sunglasses, even indoors. At least it hasn't turned into a cold and my period is mostly over.

Besides all that school is going super well. I finally got a couple of homework things back, so I'll be posting more photos soon. I am also killing in my critical theory class, I got 96 on my mid-term and have started tutoring one of my classmates.

Oh yeah, here is the a shot of my window painting, after session #5, which I did a couple of weeks ago and forgot to link here.

anyone remember this show?

Kirk also bought Ark II recently. There is not one thing about this show that I can remember. Not a single thing. I've watched a few episodes and it's OK I guess. In a hilariously preachy sort of way.

anyone remember this show?

Last month Kirk bought the whole first season on DVD. He just couldn't resist his childhood appeal of a show with a yacht, a speedboat, a helicopter AND a ro-boz.

I was about 12 when Riptide aired so for me I mostly watched it to see Perry King. At that time, I regularly crushed on Dirk Benedict (A-team), John Schneider (Dukes of Hazzard), Lee Horsley (Matt Houston), Jon-Erik Hexum (Voyagers & Cover Up), Bruce Willis (Moonlighting), Tom Selleck (Magnum P.I.), Scott Baio (Charles in Charge), Daniel Kelly (Hardcastle and McCormick) and Jason Bateman (It's Your Move). Man, I know that last one seems out of place but Jason Bateman was pretty close to my age, and in that show he was a total brat, so I totally went for him like the crushing retard I was.

That is until 21 Jump Street in 1987. For many years to come, it was all about Johnny. Sigh.

Art and Design in the Social Sphere - Project#2

Art as a collaborative effort between producer and viewer/receiver.

valentine cards
I handed out hand made Valentine's Day cards to everyone in my class, as an example of the practice that often happened when I was in grade school where we had to hand out Valentines to everyone in the class, whether you liked them or not, just to be sure no one would felt left out. How we were, in some ways, being brainwashed into buying into the bullshit concepts of romantic love. Seriously, no wonder so many people want what they can't have, or think that that's the only kind of real love there is.

Inside each card was a quotation about the notion of love in a few different contexts, minus the romantic aspect. The crass commercialization that is displayed every February nauseates me, but I didn't want to the project to be too cynical about it either. My hope was to provoke in the receivers some kind of thoughts about what love meant to them.
valentine cards
OK. So, it was kinda simplistic, but the idea was to present a prototype of a larger project I could do outside of the school setting, with enough time and effort, based on the ideas of unconditional love and random acts of kindness. I could randomly pick names out of the phone book, take their address and send them a pretty handmade card on Valentines Day (or any other holiday or for no reason, really), with no expectations for anything in return. Since I didn't sign them, I told my classmates that they were free to pass the cards on to anyone they wanted, sort of paying it forward (so to speak).

Anyway, it's giving me a few ideas of a couple of collaborative projects I can do with the great folks I've met through blogging. That means you!

I'm still working it out, so stay tuned for that.

meditation on light and dark

exploration of light and dark
colour and composition class project#1

acrylic on 3, 5x7 canvasses

project guidelines:

  • Light and dark is a fundamental fact of our existence as the cycle of night and day demonstrates. It is a powerful metaphor, which is at the core of many of our narratives. It underlies the structure of all composition and visual organization. It is a major contrast present in all colour relationships.
  • It is the starting point for the first project, one that might take you in many directions. Explore it physically, metaphorically, culturally, symbolically and in any number of ways. Think, imagine and challenge yourself.

UPDATE
this is the photo that inspired my project. i took it last summer while up at the cottage. i miss it there. sigh.

this is how i feel now that stoopid exam is over

Did anyone else notice those white hairs? Yeah...it's because I'm getting old. On the 28th I'll be 33.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about procreation. Not just the practicing part, but the actual spawning part (I know, I know, real romantic).

There's part of me that feels more capable now of caring for another human being, which I never really felt before. But the truth of the matter is, I'm having a hard time imagining myself pregnant, or toting a babe around with the hell of a school week I just experienced.

That being said, I wonder if there's ever really a perfect time to do something like this?

ideal subject position my ass

Isn't it obvious tell that I am PUMPED for my upcoming critical theory exam?

I spent the whole day yesterday, studying for that exam with Cheryl and felt so braindead that I didn't do a lick of homework last night. Instead, Kirk and I watched Bon Cop, Bad Cop, which was really good. Being half French Canadian, and bilingual, I got a real kick out of the dialogue. I wanted to watch it without subtitles, but Kirk gave me stinkeye about it, so we watched it with English subtitles. Basically it's about the tensions between Ontario and Quebec explored through the buddy cop genre as Colm Feore and Patrick Huard investigate a series of murders that take place within the "hockey community". I don't even really like hockey but I LOVED this movie.

Here is a shot of Oscar sulking with his mini-teddy because we were watching a movie and not playing with him.

Oh and thanks for all your advice on the stink problem I was having with my sweater on Friday. Please note that I have HEARD of deoderant, and understand how it works, it's just that damned sweater that needs to be burned like all future news items about Anna Nicole Smith.

i smell

A few years ago, I stopped using anti-perspirant. I was starting to get pimples in my pits and figured that smearing aluminum there every day might not be such a good thing to do. So far natural deoderants seem to work great - as long as I wear clothing made of natural fibers. Right now I'm at work, wearing my favourite black turtleneck sweater. It's acrylic. And I stink - but it's not even a normal sweat stink. It's acrid and makes me want to cry.

I love this sweater but hate that it makes me sweat more and smell after only a few hours. I totally showered today and everything. Ugh.

Tasty!, originally uploaded by 35mmMonkey.

The second week of school is almost over and it's been pretty good so far.

Except now I'm considering changing my major.

To printmaking.

Yeah.

After only 2 classes. I'm working on some stencils. Photos soon.

It's FUN!

My printmaking prof is Jack Cassady, and of all my homework, it's the only stuff I'm at all excited about.

I feel a little insane.

I guess the thing about it is, is that I LOVE painting, but I guess I'm feeling that I already CAN paint. What's interesting to me right now, is learning new ways of getting colour on paper or canvas. I'm all about the HANDS ON work.

Anyway, the deadline's not until February 2nd. So I won't worry about it yet.

sigh. Why am I here again?
