yes, my mouth is almost always open
so here are the last 2 homework assignments i submitted for alternative media and techniques with shirley yanover.
tape transfers of old letters, acrylic paint and gel medium on braced panel
20x26
found papers, buttons, yarn, beads, acrylic paint and gel medium on gessoed canvas
16"x36", 20"x20"
i feel like they are both only about 75% done, but submitted them as time just ran out. I will continue to work on them and will post my progress.
any comments would be appreciated. seriously.
unless you want to tell me you hate it and that you'd change EVERYTHING.
in which case you can piss off.
now please enjoy some (shamelessly borrowed) images of the ridiculously beautiful work of mary o'malley:

WAAAAAH Okay, we can just be in a mutual admiration society...
LOVE you and LOVE your shizzle.
The tall pink piece is STRIKING. It feels done to me... the shorter, more yellow one needs something, maybe, but I can't say what. I need to stare at it more. LOVEslovesloves.
Those look like they were from a very enjoyable class... oh but do we ALL wait til the last minute to get the damn assignments in?? I'm glad it's not just me.
valency: sometimes it takes me a whole week just to DECIDE what to do. so it's not really procrastinating. i just seem to work best in really intense short bursts. what can you do.
Very nice work shmoops!!!! ~S~
dave: thanks shmoopee!
I have to say that I'm loving your art! I'm so glad I found your journal on Nablopomo!
christine: thanks lady!
hmm maybe i should copy that buttons thing looks great.
raymi: it's SO easy. you just get a large darning needle, and piece through canvas - and stich away!!!!! ha i totally knew you would end up ripping ME off someday. now we're even.
I like your letters piece, and the tall pink one with the buttons. The tall one with the buttons works for me because all the elements cause your eye to travel all around the painting. The smaller yellow one lacks that unifying, eye moving element. (that's just me.. you can tell me to piss off now )
:) Keep posting your art!
mallow: haha. that's kinda funny. both you and valency feel the one on the left is the more done, whereas my prof argued that in art, the eye should always have a place to rest, to contemplate. soooo...she felt the one on the right was more complete and could stand on its own.
there are a few more things i want to do to both. a bit more stitching on the short canvas and more painting on the tall one.
sigh. just goes to show you that art is totally subjective.
the letters piece was for a project that was supposed to be a self portrait. so i used a bunch of handwritten private notes & letters that my best friend had sent me (this was pre-email folks). by letting people see parts of her words to me, i put them in my shoes, letting them see a part of my life that i had never shown publically before.
love it. what exactly are "tape transfers?"
murl: tape transfers are basically when you press packing tape to a photocopy, rub it down to make sure you have no bubbles. then you tear off all the excess paper and immerse it in water and rub off all the paper. the writing or image or whatever that was on the paper will stick to the tape!
that's interesting on the tape transfer technique. have you tried doing the same with gel medium?
mallow: yeah, i wanted to do it that way but was pressed for time, and the amount of time it takes to rub off the paper when using gel medium made it hard to go that route.
