impossible is the opposite of possible

We're planning on putting our condo up on the market in a couple of weeks, and I'm kinda freaking out about it.I just finished summer school and will now spend the next week or so doing nothing but moving, painting, sanding, staining and replacing shit.

I'm in need of proper studio space and can't really afford to rent something on top of what we have, so it's time. There is dedicated studio and storage space at school for 4th-year students, but I'm only in 2nd year.

I didn't realise how much it sucks lugging all my shit around, especially when the lockers we are offered are usually not big enough to store anything larger than a knapsack and boots and a coat in the winter. Riding the streetcar with anything larger than a coffee? Ugh.

So once we sell...well, then we have to try to buy a new place and hope that closing dates work out and all so we're not homeless for a couple of months.

And I start school again in 4 weeks.

Gulp.

Good news: I'm a golden baby

So, my marks are starting to come in. I'm still waiting on 3 courses but the verdict thus far, is an A!!!! That is because:

A. I'm a super, academically-inclined, mega-geek,

and

B. I'm a mature student.

Most of my peers were born in the 80s, and next year they'll be kids born in 1990. They have not really known a world without cellphones, computers, the Internet or the Simpsons. They're still sorting out the whole "growing up" thing. This is my killer advantage.

It's amazing how well you can perform when you have already experienced over a decade's worth of sometimes well-intentioned yet mostly unconsidered critiques of your work from 10-20 different boss/manager types.

I'm not at university to please my parents, to get a higher paying job or even to get institutional permission to call myself an artist. I'm there to learn as much as I can about approaches to materials, history, techniques and theory and to interact, network and collaborate with teachers, students and others as much as possible.

Even though I remember pre-VCR, I am certainly a TV baby, having learned to privilege visual experiences over others. I guess, in that respect we often find common ground and can be friends (facebook is eating my soul!!!!).

Anyway, there's nothing that could convince me to go back in time and relive years 17 through 23.

Ok, MAYBE if I had to save the world from a robot war or nuclear winter or something.

tv turnoff week april 24 - 30, 2006

I am a tv addict. If it's on I will watch it. EVERY TIME. Our television is on in our home for more than 4 hours a day, and lots of times as "background" while we're doing other things (which Kirk loves but drives me crazy since I can't NOT watch. seriously. it's pretty sad). I don't even want to admit how much it's on during weekends or how often I've fallen asleep in front of it. I would be afraid to sit down and calculate how much of my lifetime has been spent in front of the TV.

That being said. Kirk and I have decided to try turning it off for a week straight as part of Adbuster's TV Turnoff Week campaign. We tried Buy Nothing Day and it was was WAY harder than it seems, but possible. The point for us is not some political statement about how TV or shopping is inherently bad or evil, but a simple exercise in challenging the way in which we often do these activities automatically, with little or no consideration.
